Community Foundation of Burke County Grant Helps NC MedAssist Provide $270K in Medications to Burke County Patients

Behind every prescription is a neighbor who can live healthier thanks to access to medications. Thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Burke County, 333 North Carolinians are able to rest easier knowing they don’t have to choose between their medication and their basic needs.

“The support of the Community Foundation of Burke County allows us to reach patients who otherwise would go without critical medications. By removing cost as a barrier, we are able to help our neighbors manage chronic conditions and support their mental health,” said NC MedAssist CEO Brenda Vass. “We are deeply grateful for this partnership and the relief it brings to Burke County.”

In fiscal year 2025 (July 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025), NC MedAssist was able to dispense 971 prescriptions with a medication value of $270,754. Among the 333 Burke County patients, 69% were treated for chronic conditions – receiving 458 of total prescriptions. 49% of patients received behavioral health medications, receiving a total of 188 prescriptions. 

“The funding has enabled to us to make a greater impact in the community by affording NC MedAssist the opportunity to have a physical presence in Burke County. We’ve been able to meet patients where they are, face to face, and guide them through the process of enrolling into our program,” said NC MedAssist Community Outreach Manager Sandy Torres. 

“Being able to connect directly with people makes all the difference. It’s more than just providing medicine…it’s building trust and helping neighbors feel supported every step of the way.

The support of the Community Foundation of Burke County not only meets immediate needs but also strengthens long-term health outcomes for the community. When patients can manage conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or depression, they are able to live healthier, more stable lives. That stability ripples outward — reducing emergency room visits, lowering costs for the healthcare system, and creating stronger, healthier families and communities.
