Charlotte, NC – (April 2, 2014) – Bill Gerhart, will be honored with the Governor’s Award for Volunteer Service on Tuesday, April 8 at the United Way of Central Carolinas headquarters – – the event is scheduled from 8:45 am – 9:30 am. This year marks the 36th anniversary of the program that showcases North Carolina’s most dedicated volunteers.
In August 2012, MedAssist began collaborating with Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB) – creating a program that distributes free Over the Counter (OTC) medications to those in need. “We are proud to partner with NC MedAssist as they provide these medications to individuals who would otherwise go without.” said Second Harvest Food Bank Executive Director, Kay Carter. Second Harvest sends MedAssist monthly shipments of OTC medications received from their vendors; volunteers at MedAssist sort and distribute the medicine to needy families in the Charlotte community during a monthly OTC Give Away Day.
Bill has volunteered with MedAssist since 2007 and his commitment has been instrumental in making sure the OTC program runs smoothly. Bill takes responsibility for organizing the medicines for the OTC Give Away Day, boxing the medicine that is shipped to healthcare clinics outside of Mecklenburg County, as well as delivering medicine to local healthcare clinics in the county.
“Bill is here daily helping us keep the program going. Since August 2012, we have distributed over $700,000 in donated OTC medicine.” said Executive Director Lori Giang. “Over 1,000 pounds of medicine is disbursed to North Carolinians in need each month. Over 250 individuals come to MedAssist for the OTC Give Away Day to pick up free medicine that they can’t otherwise afford. This is a volunteer run program, so without Bill’s commitment, we would not be able to get the medicine in and out the door each month.”
