NC MedAssist & A Child’s Place Team Up to Promote a Healthy Start to the School Year
Free Over the Counter Medicine and School Supply Give Away Day
Friday, August 28, 2015, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
Children and Family Services Center – Training Room 1 and 2, 601 E. 5th Street, Charlotte, NC 28202
NC MedAssist, a nonprofit pharmacy program that provides free prescription medicines to low-income/uninsured North Carolinians across the state, will partner with A Child’s Place to host a FREE over the counter (OTC) medicine and school supply giveaway day on Friday, August 28.
NC MedAssist and A Child’s Place are encouraging families who are in need of OTC medicine and school supplies for their school-aged children to stop by from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. NC MedAssist is expecting over 500 individuals to attend the giveaway day; those without school-aged children are still encouraged to attend and will receive needed OTC product.
Each individual will receive over $80 worth of OTC product. The giveaway day will feature an array of items that include allergy, pain and indigestion relief, cold and flu medicine and first aid. Families can also pick up children’s items such as vitamins, Band-Aids, and much more.
“We are delighted to be able to give back and to partner with A Child’s Place to give children a healthy start to the new school year. Many of our neighbors make tough financial decisions and we hope to ease at least some of the burden by stocking their medicine cabinets. ”
-Aiysha Hayes, Hayes Financial and Tax Service, OTC Program Chair.
Participants who have school-age children will be able to select needed school supplies such as spiral notebooks, pens, crayons and glue.
“Illness is one barrier many children in our community face preventing them from being in school daily. Every day that a child is absent, they miss valuable instruction time and are outside the safety and physical comforts provided within school. It is our hope that through the giveaway day, children in our community will get the medicine and school supplies they need to have a healthy start to the school year.”
– Susan B. Hansell, A Child’s Place, Executive Director.
- Since its inception, MedAssist has distributed over $1.6 million in donated OTC medicine.
- Approximately 5,000 individuals have participated in an OTC Giveaway Day, receiving free medicine that they can’t otherwise afford.
- All OTC medicine is free and donated by Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.
- Volunteers at MedAssist sort and distribute the medicine to families.
Both volunteer groups and individuals are needed to help sort medicine on delivery days and distribute medicine during monthly giveaways days. Interested individuals and large groups from local businesses, churches, sororities, and fraternities are encouraged to contact Tonia Harris, 704.350.3574 or email@example.com.

About A Child’s Place
All children are at risk of failure but those experiencing the chaos of homelessness are at the greatest risk of falling behind in school. In an effort to erase the impact of homelessness on academic performance, A Child’s Place provides immediate, emergency services and referrals to children and their families in the midst of crisis. We stand by families as they progress from crisis to safer housing situations- all the while keeping the student focused on academics and learning.
